In 1968, Bangor, Maine, teenage writing student Thaddeus “Thad” Beaumont suffers a series of painful headaches accompanied by the overpowering sound of chirping birds. During an operation, surgeons discover a tumorous growth containing an eyeball, nostril, and two teeth protruding from his brain. They deduce these are remnants of an underdeveloped twin absorbed by Thad during gestation. When one of the nurses excuses herself from the operating room, she and other staff members notice thousands of birds swarming outside the window. Twenty-three years later, Thad asks his wife, Liz, to read pages from his newest manuscript before leaving to teach his college creative writing class. In the lecture, he speaks of the duality of writers who must release their “inner being” in order for their work to flourish. Thad Beaumont (Timothy Hutton) has had success writing novels under both his real name and his pseudonym, George Stark, which he uses to publish base thrillers. When word gets out that they are one and the same, the author holds a mock funeral for Stark. But after a rash of murders eerily similar to those in the Stark books, Thad and his wife, Liz (Amy Madigan), realize that Stark is real and responsible, and must work with local Sheriff Pangborn (Michael Rooker) to stop him.

Thad Beaumont is the author of a highly successful series of violent pulp thrillers written under the pseudonym of ‘George Stark’, but when he decides to ‘kill-off’ his alter-ego in a mock ceremony, it precipitates a string of sadistic murders matching those in his pulp novels, which are soon discovered to be the work of Stark himself. Looking like a maniacal version of his counterpart, Stark is not so willing to quit the writing game – even if it means coming after Thad's wife and their baby.
