    Stereotypes of Mountaineers and Frontiersmen: Pre-Performance Remarks

    Dr. Katherine Ledford, professor of Appalachian Studies, will share her expertise prior to a performance of Horn in the West. The pre-performance talk is free and open to the public. This program is the sixth one in High Country Humanities' ongoing series “Connecting Local and Global Rural Cultures.” This series of talks, workshops, demonstrations and film screenings is supported by a grant from North Carolina Humanities.

    Welcome to App is an extension of summer orientation and is geared toward helping new students learn their way around campus, making friends and learning more about the university before classes start. The schedule includes programs that will help students feel comfortable and confident about life in and out of the classroom. Many of the events are just about making friends and having fun!

The annual Poster Invasion poster sale features a wide selection of posters and post cards from classic poster hits to fresh off the press artist prints. A portion of sales supports scholarship for students to participate in Alternative Service Experience programs through Community-Engaged Leadership.

    Join Mountaineer Recovery Community as we welcome students to App by providing a space to create and connect. We will be painting rocks which you can take to decorate your dorm or hide on campus for other students to find. We will provide all art materials and snacks to fuel your creativity.

There will be FREE FOOD, giveaways, snow-cones, yard games, and more! Simultaneously, in Varsity Gym, we will have a DJ, bounce houses, and games. It's gonna be super fun!

    Folk Music as an Expression of Culture: Talks with Acoustic Demonstrations

    Join App State faculty members for folk music demonstrations and listen and learn to identify the defining characteristics of folk genres. Dr. Laurie Semmes will speak about the bandura, the national instrument of Ukraine, and Mark Freed will present on Appalachian folk music. Following these presentations, Dr. Jacob Kopcienski will lead an audience question-and-answer session. Free and open to the public.
