They must've hired a bunch of genius design/marketing people at Unilever. They did the same to the Vaseline lotion bottles. Both Unilever products.
They used to have a flat cap so you could turn them upside down so you wouldn't have to shake it to get the lotion out. Then they made the cap curved so now it falls over when you turn it upside down.

That's so you can't get all of the product out easily, meaning you end up buying replacements more often, thus more revenue for Unilever ;-)

Maybe I'm the minority, but I've come to accept this design. Keeping the bottle with the flat surface at the bottom helps all the shower gel naturally pool at the bottom. So when I shower, I just lift up the bottle and give it a gentle squeeze. I prefer this over having to flip the bottle upside down and then shaking/squeezing until the gel comes down.
